River Wye:
Llangurig to Rhayader

17 km grade III

Access can be made at the small bridge in Llangurig GR908797. Grade II water leads down through a couple of kilometres of occasionally tree-overhung water. The first class III is on a sharp left hand bend, and has a boat-snatching right hand eddy. Easier water then down to the concrete bridge at GR922737. Below this the walls close in, and the river rushes down over a couple of good class III rapids. The aptly named rock garden, or letter box, gives some idea of the manoeuvring required to negotiate a particular section.

A footbridge and the Marteg are the next points of note. Below this, down to the town of Rhayader, are some excellent grade II and III rapids. A caravan park appears on the left a little way before the bridge. Immediately below the road bridge begins the well-known Rhayader Falls, grade III to IV. This double drop with its narrowing below has several choices of route. In huge water it becomes a solid and hard class IV with some notable stoppers to avoid. Egress can be made below on the right
